America, 1630

North America, maps

Description

Beginning in 1606, Dutch cartographer Hondius used the plates of his predecessor Mercator to reissue Mercator’s Atlas. Editions of the Atlas were also printed long after Hondius died in 1612. This map is most likely from a French edition published in 1630. Hondius notes the landing of Sir Francis Drake in present-day California and corrects the large eastern bulge on the South American continent. The vignette in the lower left corner depicts Brazilian natives making an alcoholic beverage, and various native watercrafts are shown larger than life on the oceans.
